The Polar Express – The Arrival #4

Scripture Reference: Luke 2:8-20

In the video we just saw the boy finally gets through all the mess and the time of arrival has come. The excitement of the Arrival is so great because of all the struggles we went through to get there.

Getting to the destination, the Arrival, is what we all are waiting for. It is getting to the place you always dreamed about.

In the movie it is great. But what happens when you get to “The Arrival” and it is not what you thought it would be.

Sometimes the expectation of the destination is greater than the destination itself. Disappointment occurs because the anticipation and the expectation doesn’t meet the reality of what you have imagined.

What happens, when the moment moves on, and your left with the mess that is the miracle?

In the miracle, if your heart is not affected, you’ll only remember the sign and miss what is significant.

Did you realize that the first 4 letters of Significant is Sign?

Luke 2:8-20

And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

If your heart is not affected, you’ll only remember the sign and miss what is really significant.

Could some of our problems today be because we’ve only celebrated the sign and missed what is significant. A lot of people saw signs but Mary saw what was significant.

The Stars were a sign that moved on.

                        but Mary…

The Angels were a sign that made an announcement, declared it, then departed.

                        but Mary…

The Shepherds saw a sign, enjoyed the experience, then went home.

                        but Mary…

The Wise men came to offer a one-time gift as a sign.

                        but Mary…

Mary encountered all these signs but she is the only person in the whole Christmas story that talks about her heart. Her life had changed because her eyes saw the sign but her heart saw what was significant.

Sometimes the expectation of the destination is greater than the destination itself. Disappointment occurs because the anticipation and the expectation doesn’t meet the reality of what you have imagined.

Everyone who is praying for a miracle never considers the mess it will create.

If it is only a sign you’ll quit, because we never consider the size of the mess that the miracle creates.

There is a mess in every miracle.

For every cripple that Jesus healed they now had to go get a job.

For every spouse that prays “Lord, let him or her just get on fire for you.” is a year of marriage counseling to follow.

For every promotion there is a bigger set of problems.

If you only see the sign, the miracle will make you miserable.

Every miracle is only a seed to greater message. But if the miracle is only a sign and not significant in our heart the miracle that is a seed will never grow into the message.

Can you outlive the mess to get to the Mess-age?

Mary lived for 30 years with this kid, that is God’s son, and Joseph isn’t his biological daddy, saying he is the Messiah and she is dealing with this mess of public perception.

There is a Message in this Mess.

The best this you can do is not “Shout About It” but in the silent place of you heart say “You’ll See!” and go back to grinding.

Mary saw the sign but held onto what was significant.

The sign on the outside is supposed to translate to significance on the inside. If it doesn’t you’ll never have the strength for the mess that comes with the miracle.

What has God been showing you that you have never let move into the realm of Significant?

For some of us, our salvation was only a sign that never turned into a Miracle of Significance. But today there is a prayer of significance you can pray that will change your life.
