Stranger Things – More Than a Feeling #3

Scripture Reference: II Corinthians 4:13-18

Stranger Things - ‘Stranger Things’ is a series on Netflix. The setting is in 1980s Indiana, where a group of young friends witness supernatural forces. As they search for answers, the children unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries.

You’re not that weird.

You’re not the only one with your problem.

There is a supernatural side to life. It is more real than the natural, physical world you operate in. (3:00)

What is “More than a Feeling?” (Boston 1976) Your journey with Jesus is more than a feeling, it is Faith!

A common phrase that people say in modern Christianity is “I feel that God is saying…”

Be careful about going on “feeling!” The great concern is we have put a vocabulary on a spirituality that Jesus would have never done. (6:00)

If you base your life and hearing on a “feeling” of what He is saying, and not a Faith in what He is doing you will curse the layovers of your life.

A is when you are flying somewhere, and you have to make an additional stop or two before you get to your desired destination. There are stopping points on the itinerary of this flight called “Life.”

We expect it when we travel on an airplane, but we question it on our journey with Jesus.

Our struggle is, our feelings want a reason when God is trying to give a revelation.

God doesn’t communicate with your feelings He communicates with your spirit. (10:00)

II Corinthians 4:13-18

13 Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, 14 knowing that he who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into his presence. 15 For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.

16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

You can live in the layover, or you can lament about the layover!

            Trip around the world.

If it is not “More Than a Feeling” you’ll be trapped by Obligation, Manipulation, Victimization.

Feelings are great for celebrating, not decision making. (15:00)

Paul in Acts 26, 27 & 28 has a layover on his way to Rome.

  1. Paul is in prison for preaching the Gospel
  2. Makes an appeal to Caesar and has to go to Rome.
  3. Encounters a storm
  4. Shipwrecked on an island called Malta
  5. He's cold in an unfamiliar place but his life is intact.
  6. He thought he made it to safety… then as he is building a fire, he gets bit by a snake.

Acts 28:1-6

After we were brought safely through, we then learned that the island was called Malta. The native people showed us unusual kindness, for they kindled a fire and welcomed us all, because it had begun to rain and was cold. When Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and put them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand. When the native people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” He, however, shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. They were waiting for him to swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But when they had waited a long time and saw no misfortune come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god. (18:00)

Our feelings want a reason, when God is trying to give a revelation.

Malta represents a place; you must get a revelation of it because you’ll never find a reason for it.

Your Malta:       Place of pain and loss

                                    Stagnant career

                                    Unmet Expectations

A marriage that started off right but has ended wrong.

                                    Unfulfilled and drifting.

When you are in Malta God can do 2 things:

  • He can change your surroundings
  • Change your attitude

But what if He changes your surroundings by changing your attitude.

If it is not “More Than a Feeling” your morn on Malta not realizing Malta it is your mission. (23:00)

Could the answer to your prayer be a definition rather than an intervention?

            Malta - Latin - Refuge

                        Greek - honey

What if your layover is supposed to be a place of sweet refuge but because you have been swayed by your surroundings you’ve been missing your mission?

When you begin to significance in the small things you will quickly start receiving an impact for your efforts. (26:00)

Hebrews 12:2

looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Our feelings want a reason, when God is trying to give a revelation.

Jesus didn’t need a reason to go to the cross, He already had a revelation of you. That is why it say for the “Joy” set before him.

When he was on the cross who was before him. John, Mary & Mary….

But because it is an eternal sacrifice “once for all” you were also before him. (Hebrews 9:12)

You are his joy.  He is your place of sweet refuge; not by a feeling but by FAITH! (30:00)
