Only God - Problems That Persist #2

 Opening Scripture: Luke 8:40-56

As we get into the Word of God today, let's celebrate our CHECK-IN Team for all their hard work.

This is a series of seemingly hopeless situations that completely turned around in 24 hours. The only explanation is Only God.

In this series, "Only God," the purpose is not just to show what God can do but to understand who He is.

Anytime God does an "Only God" act, He wants you to go deeper to discover and attribute of who he is.

40 Now when Jesus returned, the crowd welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 41 And there came a man named Jairus, who was a ruler of the synagogue. And falling at Jesus' feet, he implored him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying.

As Jesus went, the people pressed around him.

43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone. 44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased. 45 And Jesus said, “Who was it that touched me?” When all denied it, Peter said, “Master, the crowds surround you and are pressing in on you!” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.” 47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

49 While he was still speaking, someone from the ruler's house came and said, “Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more.” 50 But Jesus on hearing this answered him, “Do not fear; only believe, and she will be well.” 51 And when he came to the house, he allowed no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and mother of the child. 52 And all were weeping and mourning for her, but he said, “Do not weep, for she is not dead but sleeping.” 53 And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But taking her by the hand he called, saying, “Child, arise.” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up at once. And he directed that something should be given her to eat. 56 And her parents were amazed, but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

I wanted to read the complete account to give context because context is everything. Our focus is on the section from verses 43-48 for this account of "Only God!"

In this section of the scripture, a woman had an internal hemorrhage, meaning she was bleeding on the inside. This internal issue manifested in an external way that caused her to be unclean according to Jewish customs.

This problem persisted for 12 years. How many of you have problems that persist?

She didn't know when her 24-hour Only God moment would arrive.

43 And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and though she had spent all her living on physicians, she could not be healed by anyone.

Did you ever think the reason we are running out because we are going to people who do not have what we need?

Many of us running out of life is because we have aligned our lives with takers, not givers.

We are going to people because we need life, but those people are the very reason we are running out of life.

But if we will go to Jesus, who is the Resurrection and the Life, He will freely give to us whatever we are out of.

44 She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.

The spirit of shame will cause you to hide from the One who is your only Hope.

She came up behind him because she didn't want to be seen by Him.

Jesus having every opportunity to expose her shame, decided to take it away.

Many of us are bleeding on the inside because of the issues we have gone through. We read this account about the discharge of 12 years, but we underestimate all that was stolen.

Her bleeding did not just steal her dignity; it stole her identity.

The discharged destroyed

  • 12 years of her life
  • all her income
  • her health
  • her reputation
  • her dignity
  • her identity

Because that what the thief does, he steals, kills, and destroys. (John 10:10)

Destroying your dignity is one thing, but ultimate destruction is when the devil destroys your identity.

What are you dealing with that is destroying you? It is not only your heart that is being destroyed, but now it is your Hope, wondering if God will ever come through.

When she touched Jesus, she simply wanted a stop to a discharge; but what God wanted to give her is drastically different than she came to get.

Everything that God does for you is to show you who He wants to be to you.

If just her health was stolen, Jehovah Rapha, The Lord my Healer, would have been sufficient.

But God, as Adonai on the scene, could conqueror the discharge that destroyed her whole life, not just her health.

Adonai means Master Over All.

Deuteronomy 3:24 “O Lord God (Adonai) You have begun to show Your servant Your greatness and Your strong hand; for what God is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as Yours?”

Adonai, Master Over All, is why Jesus could stop for a daughter with a discharge and tell Jairus I still got your daughter also!

 Listen to verse 46.

46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me, for I perceive that power has gone out from me.”

When the culture of her day abandoned her, Adonai, Master Over All, showed up for her.

When the religion of her day rejected her, Adonai, Master Over All, restored her.

When the priests of her day could not heal her, Adonai, Master Over All, came through for her.

47 And when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed.

48 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.”

When she encountered Adonai, she didn't realize she was simultaneously experiencing Abba, which means Father.

When she encountered Adonai, He restored her dignity. When she experienced Abba, He restored her identity.

One encounter with Jesus, changed a woman who was destroyed and dying because of a discharge, into a Daughter.

Some of you need to know that God is Adonai, Master Over All, and you need to trust him as Abba, the Father who loves you.

Some of you know Him as Abba, but need to believe He is also Adonai, Master Over All.

She encountered Adonai and Abba by coming to Jesus. It is the same for you. If you come to Jesus, he will introduce you to your Father, who is Master Over All.
