iChurch – The Cycle #5

Opening Scripture: Luke 24:13-34

For this series, “iChurch,” the one take-away is “There is no ‘I’ in Church but there is a ‘U’”! This means, for us to get the most out of Church and for us to view the church properly, it is not about what “I” need or what “I” want but what God said about the church.

When we desire for the Church to become what God has said about it, then the needs of you and I will be met.

So, like most things in the Kingdom of God, what God said will seem contrary to carnal thinking and intellect.

We will never be fulfilled as a Follower of Christ until we go from:

            Ichurch to iChurch

I take to iServe

            Introvert to iGrow

            IQ to iKnow

Notice that there is a little “i” and a large Serve, Grow and Know. So, to get us operating at LARGE levels of Serving, Growing and Knowing, we have to develop a foundation.

Luke 24:13-34
13 That very day two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14 and they were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15 While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them. 16 But their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” 19 And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. 21 But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” 25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

28 So they drew near to the village to which they were going. He acted as if he were going farther, 29 but they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening and the day is now far spent.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at table with them, he took the bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. 31 And their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures?” 33 And they rose that same hour and returned to Jerusalem. And they found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he was known to them in the breaking of the bread.

We have an agenda; everything we do is about your spiritual formation. We want you to re-present Christ.

Illustration:Emmaus – the Road to no where!

Vs. 17 “17 And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad.”

Many of us are on a road to ‘No Where”! This is the importance of iServe, iGrow, and iKnow,

Vs. 33 – They returned to Jerusalem, many believe they were a part of the Upper Room Experience.

The Cycle

In baseball there is something known as “The Cycle”. The Term the Cycle is when a player hits for a single, double, triple and hits a homerun all in the same game. This is very rare.

  • Natural cycles. The natural cycle, in which the hits come in order from fewest to most total bases (single, double, triple, home run), has been accomplished 14times in MLB history: The only natural cycle by a member of the New York Yankees was hit by Tony Lazzeri in 1932.
  • The most cycles hit by a single player in Major League Baseball is three, accomplished by four players.
  • Cycles are rare inMajor League Baseball (MLB), and have occurred only 319 times, starting with Curry Foley in 1882.The most recent example was accomplished by José Abreu of the Chicago White Sox on September 9, 2017, against the San Francisco Giants.

Batter Up

When a player gets up to bat they know the objective.

As we are establishing a new culture in our church, we would be wise to establish it on “What God said” rather than creating an “iChurch.” We must know His objective.

His objective is lined out in His Definition, not “iDefinition.”

Church – “a building used for public Christian worship” Oscars Dictionary.

Bible References to the Church-

Matthew 16:15-18 “the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it.”

            Ephesians 5:24-32 “Bride of Christ”

            Colossians 1:18 “Body of Christ”

You never get a second chance to make a First impression.

It’s a Hit - Single

There is no “I” in church but there is a “U”. But “U” cannot do it alone.

The Thing about “a single” is you are dependent on someone else get you around to 2nd, 3rd, and bring you Home.

You cannot score a run without the help of the Team, your GroupLife.

Acts 2:46-47

46 And day by day, attending the templetogetherand breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.

You + 2 is a group!

Matthew 18:19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

You + 2 is a group. But this says 2 or 3?

We want a minimum of 3 because we know that all 3 can’t be there all the time. So, there is still power if only 2 of you can make it.

But if there is just 2 and 1 can’t make it the scenario becomes “I” again.

Talk about God!

Pray for one another!

See you Sunday!

46 And day by day, attending the templetogether

At church you get to know “About someone” – in homes you get to “Know someone”

At church you get to see “how” they are – in homes we get to know “who” they are.

At church you can meet them – in homes you can do life with them.

What is more effective 1 group of 1,300 or 433 groups of 3?

A Double

When you hit a double, it is a hit hard enough to get you past 1stbut not enough to get you to 3rd. So you are stranded in the middle, feeling like you are all alone. You are surrounded by the other team and are forced to communicate differently.

Ephesians 1:17-19

17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelationin the knowledge of him,18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might”.

To develop roots to where you are growing it is not about how much information we can gather, it is about “Asking the right iQuestion.”

The iQuestion – Do I want to Know about Himor operate in the Knowledge of Him?

Many people what to be in iKnow groups because they want knowledge about Him (Jesus). We cannot settle any longer just know about Him when he has called us to operate in the Knowledge of Him.

Example:Those times when all you can say is “I don’t know” or “It is to much.” God is trying to bring out the “Knowledge of Him” in you.

He is making you into more than you. He is making you like Him.

The Triple

The world is waiting to see our private information displayed in public participation.

Matthew 14:16-20

16 But Jesus said, “They need not go away; you give them something to eat.” 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” 18 And he said, “Bring them here to me.” 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over.

                        Baseball is a numbers game.

The disciples, at this point got the 10% and the 20%, but Jesus, in this miracle, was only setting them up to get in on the next miracle.

They got Appreciation! The got Anticipation! What they hadn’t experienced was participation. Jesus wanted them to have the experience.

The great conundrum is how do we get to 70% Experience and 10% information? Because the reality is we are existing with 70% information and 10% experience.

What does a Homerun look like?

We know what a Homerun in real baseball is, but what about Church.

This is message is called The Cycle for a specific purpose. The beauty of a cycle is that you can hit it in any order as long as you hit all 4 types of hits in the game.

The beauty of this GroupLife is you can start anywhere; iServe, iGrow, or iKnow. If it is done properly one will always lead to another.

            iKnow to iServe or iGrow

            iServe to iGrow or iKnow

            iGrow to iKnow or iServe

When this occurs, it is always a Homerun.

You are up to Bat!

Planted - “Fruit where you are, Roots where you’re Growing.”

3 Keys to “Roots” (Time, Talking, Tithe)

  1. Attending - 3 Sunday’s per month. National statistics show active church attendance is 1.8 Sundays a month.
  2. Inviting - Inviting means Invested. If we won’t invite someone it is because of one of 2 reasons: A Fruit Issue or A Root Issue. We are not Producing, or We are not Planted.
  3. Invest - Time (Attending), Talent (Fruit or Inviting), Tithe (Financially)

We have missed “YOU” because we have done great on a platform but haven’t connected personally.

We cannot pastor from a platform… pastoring has to be done personally.

So, what has God shown us from Heaven’s perspective?

  1. The New Building
  2. Our desire to be in the New Facility is our 2020 vision. We are still on the time frame to make that happen. If we didn’t break ground until Jan. 2020 we would still be in by Sept. 2020.
  3. The Problem: If you feel you belong to TWBC because of a project, when the project is done you will feel you do not belong any longer.
  4. If you feel lost now and do not have a place to belong, how will you feel when we get into a building 2X this size.

YOU are more important than any project!!!

  1. Our Students & Our Kids
  2. TWBC’s desire is for us to create an environment that by the 8th grade our kids can live as true Followers of Christ in a world that doesn’t.
  3. Identity, Thoughts, Acts, Ways of God and now how to live it out and not be ashamed.

Therefore, beginning Wednesday, July 11, this is going to completely become Student Ministry and Kid Facility.

This is not a “Want to” change this is a “Necessary Change” for Spiritual Formation.

  1. What about Adults?
  2. GROUP LIFE- We want you to find a place of belonging, fulfillment and experience life.
  3. Serve, Grow, Know- BASE Groups have been good but not a fit for everyone.

Examples: Cafe = Life, Security = Life, Impacting Kids = Life, Spanish Translators = Life

  1. We want to create a group that gives you Purpose and Life!!!
  2. We need your help. What do you like?
  3. Group Life gives us the opportunity to Pastor Personally.
  4. We are not dissolving what we currently have but opening it up to facilitate what we do not have.
  5. The Ease of Group Life… You + 2, Talk about God, Pray Together and commit to seeing each other on Sunday.
  6. You can be involved in more than one group.

  1. Connect Quickly

We have found at TWBC that we can get people to come… but we want you to stay. The truth is if you are not fulfilled you will not stay. We want you to get past the 6 month wall, overcome and find a place to stay.

  1. To help people get Planted we are creating a complete new position. A pastor to help you Connect.
  2. Damon Wilks will be transitioning into this role. Just as Pastor Bonnie and Pastor Jeff have transitioned in to their current positions from other roles pastor Damon will do the same. His first objective is to walk with families for the first year. Help Get “You” planted, Get “You” Life, Get “You” into a place to belong.

We don’t want to do church for you, we want to live for Christ WITH you.

Commit To Getting Dirty - Proverbs 14:4“Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox."
