Hard Rock - Tripping Hazard #3

Scripture: Matthew 7:24-27

R.E.A.C.H - Raising Eternal And Community Hope

II Corinthians 10:13b “…but will boast (celebrate, glory in) only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.”

Recognize our area of influence.

To Reach those who we were assigned.

GOAL: I believe God has called everyone of you to lead someone to Christ in 2017.

    • We can ignite nations. Ignite - to set afire or to cause to blaze with flames.
    • We can impact a 4 state area.

Impact - the force of impression from one thing on another; a significant or major affect.

    • We can, We will, We must influence culture in a 20 mile radius of TWBC.

Influence - Change Culture

Matthew 7:24-27

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

Notice the illustration that Jesus starts out with:

There was a person, who built a house, on a rock and there was a storm.

Jesus is making a comparison of a person being like a house. The houses in Jesus’ day are different than houses we see in the United States. They were built to last generations.

We were never called to leave a generation helpless, homeless or hopeless! Romans 9:30-33

30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works.

They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, 33 as it is written, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

Soul Searching

Now we need to do some digging and soul searching. When we are declaring the names and promises of God I never hear people shouting “You are my Stumbling Stone.” Or “You are my Rock of Offense.”

This is still the same Jesus as the… The Great I Am, The Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Bright Morning Star.

Illustration: Big Rock

If you are close enough to stumble over Him it means He is within reach and we did not see Him or notice Him.

Dependency will open up perceptibility!

Not as perspective or perceiving, but perceptibility is to be able to hear, see or sense.

A.W. Tozer - The tragedy of the church is that from childhood to old age men have only known a synthetic God compounded of only Logic and Theology having no eyes to see or ears to hear.

Tripping Hazard #1

Hebrew 11:3 “By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.”

“By faith we understand…”

The Tripping Hazard:

By Faith —> Revealed Knowledge —> Intellectual Understanding

Not

Intellectual Understanding —> Revealed Knowledge —> Faith

Jesus Responds - Matthew 16:17 “And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.”

Flesh and blood or human intellect did not reveal to Peter who Jesus was, only the Father.

So if we are having an understanding problem we need to check our approach to him.

Illustration: Airplane Approach - The Air Traffic Control Tower is constantly speaking and instructing the Pilot on the approach all the way through the landing.

Approaching the Father on intellect is more than listening to the wrong tower, it is turning off the tower all together and saying “I got this!” because you went to aviation school.

Tripping Hazzard #2

Faith Obtains Everything Grace Provided.

Faith is the language of the Spirit. Just as English is the specific vernacular of how we communicate so is faith to our communication with the Father.

Hebrews 11:6 “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe [have faith] that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (KJV)

The Law is perfect and holy. We would not even know what sin was if it wasn't for the law. The Law was given by God as a path way for relationship and reconciliation with him.

The Tripping Hazard:

Romans 9:30-33

30 What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, a righteousness that is by faith

31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it [the law] by faith, but as if it were based on works.

The failure of the Law occurred because their pursuit was to please the Law and not the Father. The Law became “god” therefore they were breaking the first commandment of the Law.

Question: Do we want the Word of God or the God of the Word? Many have tripped by just settling for the Word without the God who gives the words in this book life.

Tripping Hazzard #3

We would rather be wrong and die in our offense; rather than embrace being offended and get founded on the Rock.

If we are not changing, growing and conforming to the image of Christ daily most would say “we are dying.” The Truth is it is so much worse. We are becoming hardhearted and religious and cannot hear the Fathers voice while living.

If we are at this point we personally need to stumble over Him and be offended by him.

Celebrate either way this morning:

If you are founded on Him, the Rock, Celebrate!

If you haven’t seen or heard Him and this message has caused you to question some things, Celebrate! You are close enough to touch Him, even in stumbling over him even if you didn't recognize Him when you walked in.
