Greederosity – G-Recon #3

Scripture Reference: Luke 10:25-37

Reconnaissance is a mission to obtain information by visual observation or other detection methods, about the activities and resources of an enemy or potential enemy.

What does it look like to break the spirit of greed off this city, this church as well as myself and yourself? This series is designed to do just that, break the spirit of greed.

25 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

29 But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

How are you responding to the Information and Observations that God is showing you on your journey?

Opportunity becomes an Obligation.

The opportunity that I prayed for some of you to get 2 or 3 years ago now is your biggest Prayer Request, because the Opportunity is now an Obligation.

Priest - one who offers sacrifices and, in general, with sacred rites

Levite - one who did all the sacred duties of the temple

Samaritan - Jerusalem is in Judea and it is about 30 miles south of Galilee. Directly in between the 2 cities is Samaria in particular the town of Sychar, where this account unfolds.

The Samaritans were a mixed-race people, who had intermarried with the Assyrians centuries before. They were hated by the Jews because of this cultural mixing, and because they had their own version of the Bible (the Law) and their own temple on Mount Gerizim.

The hate was so bad between the 2 Cultures that the Jews traveling would almost double their journey time to avoid the Samaritans.

“A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho” this means they had just left Church. (14:00)

What are the things that used to excite you that you now think are beneath you?

I am sure, when the Priest and Levite got their first Temple Opportunity there was joy and excitement. But what started as an opportunity has been weighed down by obligation.

Obligation is a scary weight. Obligation will not only steal your strength, but sabotage your sight.

Obligation steals Observation

In life, our only Limitation is our Observation.

Everything that I am stressed about today is something I obligated myself to yesterday.

If I am not careful the kids become the distraction even though they are the priority.

                        “I gotta go and do...”

When they become an obligation, something has happened to my observation. My view of them becomes distorted.

When my Observation is distorted, I’ll never step into my Opportunity. (20:00 Min)

Observation becomes an Invitation

The labels (Samaritan) put on you by you and by others can be a foundation to build on or the prison that contains you.

Stop Waiting on “good stuff” to happen to you, Identify (observe) what is in you!

How you see me, is different than how I see me. (25:00 Min)

What is Important vs. What is Important in the moment.

It wasn’t, that what the Priest and Levite were doing wasn’t important, it just wasn’t important in the moment.

Where you are going to go eat lunch in the next 30 minutes is important. It is Big Tip Group Life Sunday. But it is not important in this moment.

If we are not careful, we will prioritize lunch that sustains life over the God who gives Life.

Lunch is important, but don’t miss Life for lunch.  (30:00 Min)

Some of you are thinking “Who am I?” the Priest, Levite, maybe on my best day the Samaritan… when in reality you’re the traveler who has been beat up by life.

The reason Jesus could be so descriptive in what the Samaritan did is because He knew what He came to do! (35:00 Min)
