Encounter - I’m Venting #6

Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 & John 5:19-21

R.E.A.C.H - Raising Eternal And Community Hope

II Corinthians 10:13b “…but will boast (celebrate, glory in) only with regard to the area of influence God assigned to us, to reach even to you.”

Recognize our area of influence.

To Reach those who we were assigned.

GOAL: I believe God has called everyone of you to lead someone to Christ in 2017.

    • We can ignite nations. Ignite - to set afire or to cause to blaze with flames.
    • We can impact a 4 state area.

Impact - the force of impression from one thing on another; a significant or major affect.

    • We can, We will, We must influence culture in a 20 mile radius of TWBC.

Influence - Change Culture

God wants to have “Encounters” with you.

Encounter - a face to face meeting; He wants to see you and for you to see Him.

Luke 9:28-36

28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.

John 5:19-21

19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.

Clarify:

I want to take a moment to clarify where were are headed and what we are doing. Since Super Sunday we have intentionally not brought up the New Facility.

Mark 2:27 “27 And he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

The same principle applies. The new facility is made for the people, the people are not made for the facility.

As we go into this Encounter Series, we are also going to be laying out the plans to get started on the new facility.

Why a new facility? This is what “Encounter” is all about. All through the scriptures God created a place to have an “Encounter” with his people.

The earth was place created for people that God could come and have a real Encounter with them.

The Tabernacle in the Wilderness was a place created for God to have a real Encounter with people.

The Temple was a place created for God to have a real Encounter with his people.

The New Covenant was created for God to have a real Encounter with Us!

The only purpose for the New Facility is this… a place for You to have a real Encounter with God.

Authentic Relationships:  By creating an environment for divine connection, we develop quality relationships and experience life in Christ together. (First Core Value/DNA)

    • The Facility isn't an Idol or a Holy Shrine it is a Tool.
    • The Facility isn't a Christian Retirement Home or Country Club. It is designed to be a  training environment to equip and send out. We are Kingdom Expanders and not Kingdom Squatters.
    • This is not about a personal space but making “a Place” for everyone.

The Plan

Construction Documents - $165,000 before the end of the year.

Break Ground when we have a 1/3 of the cost in savings, Goal Sept. 2018

Paid off by the time we move in, our 2020 Vision.

Intro Christmas Series: Who is Sam T. Sirhc? Are we celebrating who we do not know. Have we gotten Christmas backwards.

I’m Venting

God wants to do some “venting” this morning. His venting is different than our venting. His venting is Adventing and Eventing.

Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus at Christmas

The term is a version of the Latin word meaning “coming”.

The Old Testament is Advent. The New Testament is Event.

Illustration: Having a Baby

Do you remember all the preparation that you went through when you were out to have your first child.

Many of us do not get prepared, we go OVERBOARD.

When is the last time you went overboard with “Advent” getting ready for an “Event” of God in your life.

You have to have an Advent to get to the Event (Encounter) a time of expectant waiting and preparation.

Some of us get to be a part of an Event because of someone else’s Advent.

Believing God is your Advent. It is the process to get you to your Event

Many of us our “Event” is nothing because it is simply the outcome of your “Advent” (nothing).

The following is the account of 2 people in the scripture with very similar Advents. But their responses created different outcomes to their Events.

Luke 1:9-20

Zechariah’s Story

according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great before the Lord. And he must not drink wine or strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

18 And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.” 19 And the angel answered him, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I was sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time.”

Luke 1:26-38

Mary’s Story

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.

Advent (preparation for celebration) asks for understanding, Unbelief asks for proof.

Asking a question is not unbelief it is the need for understanding. Making a statement is unbelief.

These are very similar circumstances but very different results. This occurs many times in our daily lives as well. Two people have the same need such as a healing, financial, marriage, deliverance and they end up with different results.

1. You have to have an Advent to get to the Event (Encounter) a time of expectant waiting and preparation.

2. Some of us get to be a part of an Event because of someone else’s Advent.

3. Believing God is your Advent. It is the process to get you to your Event

Mary and Zechariah had very similar accounts with different results:

Both were visited by Gabriel

Zechariah - 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord

Mary - 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God… And the virgin’s name was Mary.

There is no shortage of Heaven wanting to visit earth including God himself.

Both Freaked Out:

Zechariah - 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him.

Mary - 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.

There is nothing wrong with freaking out when God shows you something great. It is not if you freak out but what spirit overtakes you in that moment.

Zechariah was overcome with fear. Mary was overcome with desire.

The Angel Responded:

Zechariah - 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard,

Mary - 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

Notice that the Angel, God’s voice and representative, did not reprimand them for freaking out.

God is not mad at you. In fact, just the opposite, He is trying to find every way to empower you.

The Angel Prophesied:

Zechariah - and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John.

Mary - 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”

When He shows you something, He is not trying to show you what is impossible, He is showing you what he is about to bring you into.

Divine appointments of favor are more than encouragement, it is the Spirit of Prophecy.

Revelation 19:10 “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

1. You have to have an Advent to get to the Event (Encounter) a time of expectant waiting and preparation.

2. Some of us get to be a part of an Event because of someone else’s Advent.

3. Believing God is your Advent. It is the process to get you to your Event.

The Response:

Zechariah - And Zechariah said to the angel, “How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years.”

Mary - 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”

Unbelief asks a question but then follows it up with a statement that turns the desire for understanding into a statement of doubt.

Zechariah asks a question (nothing wrong with that) but then makes a statement of why it can’t happen.

I believe it was the product of the spirit that he let come upon him.

Mary asks a question (nothing wrong with that). Her question was asked out of a desire to know the plans of God. So her question, like Zechariah, is a product of the spirit that came upon her.

One produced doubt, the other produced faith.

Many of us fall victim to the same fallacies of Zechariah with statement like “I know God can but…”

Today make a response of Mary. “I know God can, now show me how.”

Believing God is your Advent. It is the process to get you to your Event.
