Back to the Future - Before & After #4
Opening Scripture: III John 2-4
As we get into the Word of God today can we celebrate the CHECK-IN TEAM for all they do.
As we go “Back to the Future” I have heard this phrase a lot “If I only knew then what I know now.” As I visit with other lead pastors and as I lead coaching groups of pastors a current topic of discussion is “What did you realize that you need to start doing different?”
My answer to that question is “If we ever go through a crisis again, I want a deep assurance in my spirit that our people know how to properly feed themselves.”
Meaning: We know how to read and study the Bible but also teach others how to read and study Bible. The same with prayer, worship, and other aspects of a solid believer.
III John 2-4
2 Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, as it goes well with your soul. 3 For I rejoiced greatly when the brothers came and testified to your truth, as indeed you are walking in the truth. 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
I titled this Before & After but the word Before has a duel meaning -- B-4. As you look at our worship center we have built the 4 B’s of our Theology into the set-up of our worship center.
The 4 B’s -- Body, Blood, Baptism and Bible
The Body & Blood
If you are wondering what the cost of your sin is Isaiah explains it in one verse. The New Testament doesn’t tell us exactly what Jesus looked like after He was scourged, but Isaiah 52:14 says, “As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—"
This was the body that paid the price of my sin and yours.
But little did the world know, that every time that the blood of Jesus was shed, Jesus was taking back the authority that was lost in the Garden of Eden.
The first place Jesus shed his blood was in the Garden.
Matthew 24:36 “Not my will but Thy will be done.”
He won back our will power.
The second place Jesus shed his blood was on the whipping post.
Isaiah 53:5 “and with his stripes we are healed.”
Stripes - to strike until blood is drawn.
The third time Jesus shed his blood was with the Crown of Thorn’s.
Hebrews 9:14 “purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
Enabled us to be Spirit-led Thinking men and women of God.
The fourth time Jesus shed his blood was when they put Nails in his hands.
When Nails went through the hands of Christ it won back our ability to bless.
Bless - the ability to bring the things from the Kingdom of Heaven into manifestation here on the earth.
The fifth time Jesus bled was when his feet were pierced.
When his feet were pierced it was Christ regaining our dominion on the earth.
Dominion - to rule with authority
The sixth time Jesus Shed his blood was when He was pierced in his side.
Blood - Justification
Water - Sanctification
The seventh time Jesus bled was the internal bleeding of bruises.
This was to heal us of all the internal issues we deal with; mainly 3 things: Iniquities, Hurts & Inner Vows.
So how does what Jesus did transfer over to who we are? By Baptism, three distinct baptisms.
Baptism into the Body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12: 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.
To be saved you need only to be baptized into the Body of Christ by the Holy Spirit. This happens when you pray a simple prayer of faith confessing your need for Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins.
When you experienced salvation, The Holy Spirit baptized you into the Body of Christ.
You became a member of the Body of Christ when the Holy Spirit baptized you into it.
Acts 2:38 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
When you are saved you become a new person. When you are baptized in water the old person is cut off. The Bible refers to this as the circumcision of the heart. Romans 22:29 “… and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter.”
Holy Spirit Baptism
John the Baptist distinguishes between being baptized in water with being baptized in the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 3:11 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Luke 24:49 49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
Acts 1:4-5 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
When you are baptized by Jesus in the Holy Spirit you receive the power to live a new life. In order to live a victorious life, you need to be water baptized and Spirit baptized.
Ephesians 6:17 “and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the [revealed or rhema] word of God.
Sword - Greek - machaira
This was a weapon of “Terror.” It was 19 inches long. Both sides of the blade were razor sharp, making this much more dangerous than any of the swords in the history of Rome. The tip of the sword angled upward, making the end of the blade extremely deadly.
The wounds inflicted by this sword were far worse than any blades ever before used by Rome. As a solider would stab the enemy because of the design alone great damage would take place. Through training the solider would be taught to twist the knife before withdrawing it which would cause the inner organs too spill out as they withdrew the sword.
I know this is graphic detail, but you need to know what kind of sword God gave you to launch an assault on the crippling devices and killing schemes of Satan.
It is time for some of you to get mad as a believer. Mad enough to use the revealed Word of God and to attain Victory.
Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
We must first recognize that Paul calls this the “Sword of the Spirit,” meaning revealed by the Spirit, not the “Sword of the Logos.”
So how do the Sword of the Spirit and the Written word of God work in unison together?
Just as in the armor the belt is what carried the sword, so is the written word of God that carries of Sword of the Spirit.
You will almost never get a rhema - revealed Sword of the Spirit word from God without the logos - written Belt of Truth word firmly in place.
John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
John 16:13 “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
It is not just knowing the truth, it is the truth you know.
Here is the power of B-4, Christ in me is a change of position, Me in Christ is a change of condition. Now starts the “After.”
What will you do now that you know the Before?
