Sermon Discussion

Let’s start today by having someone read John 4:31-34.

Over the past couple of weeks Pastor Joel has talked to us about how God’s culture works opposite to the way our carnal mind thinks…
What are some examples, either from your life or from the Bible, of the culture of God operating contrary to the way the human mind works?

When an occurance takes place that goes against the natural order of things, whether it be a healing, or someone being set free from any sort of bondage, or receiving supernatural provision, it is often referred to as a miracle…
Discuss why we should see miracles take place when we have encounters with God’s culture. Let’s also discuss what each of us sees our community looking like when we have allowed God’s culture to become our culture. Revisit the account of Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4 to see what happened when God’s culture impacted this woman’s culture.

Let’s close our time by praying for each other. Pray for any requests by asking for God’s culture to take place in their situation.

Matthew 5:14-16
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

As you read today’s scripture text, take a closer look at the word ‘Basket’. Depending upon what Bible translation you use it may say ‘bowl’ or ‘bushel’, but the point is this…In order to cover something with a bowl or basket it would have to be upside down, which means it would be empty. Life can get so upside down sometimes that the very things God has given you to carry His blessings to others actually become empty and hide your light rather than allow it to shine. If this scenario rings true in any area of your life today, your Father wants to turn things right side up. Ask Him to refill your basket with His goodness and love today.

1 John 3:18
Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.

Happy Valentines Day! As today is the day that everyone tends to focus on love and relationships, take some time to reflect on the important relationships in your life. How do you show your spouse, children, family members, and close friends that you love them. While it’s important to verbally express your love, words alone, without corresponding action will soon begin to fall on deaf ears. This is where allowing God’s culture to impact yours comes into play. When you begin to love others the way God loves you, that love will begin to express itself through time and action. It all starts with spending time in the presence of God and becoming well acquainted with it. Begin strengthening your relationships with love today.

Matthew 6:9
Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name.

Did you ever take notice of how Jesus began His prayer to our Father? He didn’t just jump right in with needs, wants, and complaints, instead he took the time to recognize and respect the God He served. It may not seem like a big deal but if you’ll take time to put God where he rightfully belongs, in first place, on top, above all else, you will…1) Show Him the honor and respect He deserves…2) Show your problems and anything coming against you just Who it is that they are dealing with…and 3) Build your faith by re-establishing that you serve the God of all God’s who has never failed or fallen. Giving Him honor is so much more than stroking his ego, it’s humbly positioning yourself to receive from His throne of grace.

Matthew 6:10
Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

The Kingdom’s culture is not a system that you simply participate in. The culture of the Kingdom must be brought forth from within you. Worship cannot be forced, it must be genuine. You might be able to physically make someone bow, but worship does not come from the outside in, it comes from the inside out. You will not see culture change take place around you until the Kingdom’s culture is naturally flowing out of you. You shouldn’t have to remind yourself to walk in love, walking in love should simply come naturally to you. As you further acquaint yourself with His culture it will do more than simply come upon you, it will come out of you!

Matthew 6:11
Give us this day our daily bread
John 4:31-34
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

When you read Jesus’ prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread”, do you only equate that with Him asking God to meet His physical needs? While that is the case in part, He also was speaking of spiritual bread. Nothing brings more gratification and satisfaction than knowing that you have made the most of an opportunity that God has given you to meet someone else’s need. In John 4, you see that Jesus need for physical sustenance was overridden by His desire to do God’s will. While God has no desire to make you go without your daily needs, He knows that seeking satisfaction in doing His will is far more fulfilling. Nothing is more beneficial to your life and faith than seeing what He is doing and getting in on the action.

Matthew 10:7
7 And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.

The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand! In other words it’s so close you can touch it, more accurately, it is in your hands. Most people have the mindset that when everything is right…when the kids are out of the house, or when my bank account is healthy, when I get more free time, I will do more for God. There is a reason why Jesus said ‘As you go’. If you’re waiting until everything in life is perfect, you’ll never do anything. But, if on the way to perfection, you make it a point to bring Kingdom culture into every situation and circumstance, you’ll realize that you aren’t waiting on the Kingdom, the Kingdom is waiting on you! You’re already anointed to bless and see the miraculous manifest around you. Do it!
