Sermon Discussion

In Today’s message, Pastor Joel talked about something that no believer is immune to - FEAR. Fear, or the state of being afraid, is a place we’ve all found ourselves in many times throughout our lives.

Let’s take a few minutes and everyone share a fear that you deal with on a regular basis. How have you seen this fear hinder your walk with Christ? Have you overcome this fear? If so, how? Remember that this group is a safe place! The fears that are named will NOT leave this room.

Someone please read 2 Timothy 2:7.
Pastor Joel made this very important statement, ”The test of fear is not to look at your life to find fear. It is to look at your life to find out when you took the last step of faith.”
What are some ways that fear disguises itself so that you don’t come to a place of dealing with it? How do you bring yourself to a place of stepping out in faith in spite of your fear? Do you feel that fear ever becomes a non-factor or will their always be the opportunity to allow it to hinder your faith?

If your destiny is just on the other side of your fear, then it’s time to take a step of faith! As family, let’s spend some time lifting each other up in prayer and walk arm in arm into our destinies. Pray and speak the Word over one another for strength and encouragement.

Hebrews 10:38-39
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.”
39 But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

Faith is what pleases God…Those who are willing to trust God and step out in spite of what they see going on around them that may be to the contrary. When is the last time you stepped out and did something by faith?…prayed for sick family member, friend, or someone you saw in the grocery store; gave generously beyond what you thought you were able; or shared the love of God with someone who may not receive it. If you haven’t then you’ve shrunk back. Stepping out of your comfort zone should be common place in your life. Don’t let fear keep you from experiencing your destiny. The victory you seek is just a faith step away.

Job 3:25
For the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me.

Did you know that what you fear controls you? Many people fall victim to the very things they try to avoid out of fear. People who fear sickness always seem to catch whatever is going around. People who are afraid to drive always seem to get into accidents. Those who fear that their kids will turn out to be bad people end up seeing that very thing take place. Why? First, if you fear something you aren’t in faith about it. Faith is the tool God gives us to obtain every blessing His grace provides. Second, the enemy knows how to play on those fears and will deceive you into making decisions that bring those fears to pass. Fear is an enemy of humanity. Recognizing it will allow you to takes steps to overcome it.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.

The phrase, ‘the fear of the Lord’ can be confusing to many. They will ask, if God is so good then why should I fear Him. The main thing to remember is that the fear described in most cases refers to a reverential awe that comes from recognizing just how powerful God is. You stand in reverence and respect before the creator of all things knowing that He has all power and authority and nothing is impossible for Him. But you should look at it like this…The thought of not being in right standing with Him is something to fear. After experiencing His goodness and love, imagining life without Him is very scary. Use this ‘fear’ to put yourself in the place of those who don’t know Him…it will drive you to reach them.

1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.

According to this scripture, people don’t have fear issues, they have love issues. Unfortunately, most of the church today is faithless and weak because it preaches the wrath and anger side of God as opposed to His amazing, unstoppable love. When fear is the motivator, relationship is hindered because you won’t pursue a deeper relationship with someone your afraid of. When you’re not in proper relationship you don’t experience all of the benfits that relationship can provide. When love is what motivates you, you will stay in a constant place of communication and understanding, experiencing His blessings and benefits to the fullest.

Galatians 5:6
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love.

Did you notice what this verse said about the relationship between faith and love? Faith works through, or by, love. It all starts at salvation. You experience a touch of God’s love that impacts your life enough to believe in Him. This now becomes your faith! Had it not been for the encounter with His love you would’ve never put your faith in Him. All of your fears and misconceptions about Him disappeared from that point on. That was only the start, the more you experience His love through continued encounters with Him, the stronger your faith in Him will become. Faith to reach out and do what you never thought you could or would is rooted in your love relationship with Him.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

As a believer, you must understand that faith is not denial. Many Christians think that their faith isn’t strong until their fear goes away. So, many people try to pretend that their fear is not there so they can operate in some sort of faith. Faith is not the absence of fear, faith is moving forward in spite of it. The spirit of fear is real and will always try to keep you from taking new steps of faith. In spite of the realness of fear, by constantly taking steps of faith you will get to a place where fear loses it’s power over you. It all begins with a single step, a step of faith. Your destiny is just on the other side of your fear. So today, what have you been afraid to step into? Take that step into your destiny!
