Small Beginnings

The Way Bible Church began on Dec. 2, 1999. As I, Pastor Joel Tiemeyer, started the church the vision was to have a place for people to worship God scripturally and whole heartedly. Like most steps of faith that we take in life it wasn’t the easiest thing to do. As we meet for the first time there was a grand total of 3 people including myself. Most people thought and many said that I was destined to fail but at the age of 21, when I started the church, I realized that it wasn’t about me it was about God and what He wanted to see done in Sulphur Springs. There were many trying times as we were meeting in an old run down motel conference room. Every Sunday we would get there at 7:00 A.M. and set up sound equipment and try to make a place presentable to worship in. A place where the roof leaked, the heater hardly worked in the winter and the air conditioner wasn’t any better for the hot Texas summers.

We did this for the whole first year and at the end of the first year we had a total of six people in regular attendance. Many times during the first year I felt like quitting but I realized that we had doubled in size at the end of the year. We started in to our second year and things did not get easier. The building conditions got worse and the masses of people I dreamed about preaching to when I started this journey still were not coming. We went through the second year and we believed God to do great and mighty things. By the end of the year we had 12 people in regular attendance. Even though the crowds were small we could see God moving in the hearts of people and 3 souls were saved during that year.

The third year was more of the same frustrations but on May 4, 2002 we faced the biggest challenge of all. It was my wedding day and I was going out of town for a week on my honeymoon. Two hours before I was to get married the motel where we always meet calls and they tell us tonight is the last night we are open for business we are chaining the doors at 8:00 A.M. when the last customer leaves. You need to come get your equipment. Through the favor of God we were able to have church there that morning but after that we had no place to meet. I was on my way to my honeymoon and wondering what would become of the church that we all had worked so hard at keeping together. After 2 months of finding temporary meeting places we were able to buy the building our first building. It held 100 people and from where we had been meeting this building was heaven. We moved in with just a little over 20 people. By the end of the third year we had over 24 people on faithful attendance and 5 were saved that year. We doubled in size again and all the frustrations that had been hindering us were fading in the light of the new things God was doing. Our fourth year was what I like to call our “explosion year”.

At the beginning of the year we had many services with around 25 people but by the time May 2003 came we had our biggest service ever up to that point we had over 100 people in attendance. I was over whelmed with joy. The building we had bought just a few months ago was almost full. This led to a whole other set of problems, but these are the kind of problems that every Pastor wants to have. We were growing so much our building couldn’t contain what God was doing. God opened up door for us to purchase 24 acres just outside of the city limits of Sulphur Springs which would facilitate our growth for years to come.

We would love for you to be a part of this amazing journey. Check out our service times and come join us on this walk of faith.
